The project IMPROVE LIFE co-financed by LIFE + Environment, Policy and Governance of the European Commission, to improve air quality in the underground rail environment, has this January (2015) taken its first steps to installing air quality measuring equipment at a station on Line 5 of the Barcelona Metro system. To mark the event the local Catalan television canal TV3 included coverage of the IMPROVE LIFE project in its news bulletin of the 2nd of February, with a video showing the monitoring equipment used during the sampling campaigns and a discussion regarding underground air quality. The sampling campaign will continue in various rail stations throughout much of the coming two years. The presently ongoing “Line 5 Experiment” will focus on the effect that nocturnal tunnel works (for example, replacing rail lines) have on daytime air quality in the platforms.
